You Could Have a Thyroid Problem and Not Know It

You could have a thyroid problem and not know it. Women are five to eight times more likely than men to have thyroid problems. One woman in eight will develop a thyroid disorder during her lifetime. Still it remains most underdiagnosed condition.

Dr Disha Sridhar

I am a Gynaecologist Obstetrician ( MD, DNB OBGYN )with an emphasis on INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE.

If you struggle with thyroid disease, you’re not alone.⁣ As a former sufferer of Autoimmune thyroid disease, I Know the pain and suffering involved first hand! The thing is, women are more susceptible to thyroid disease than men as we have more sensitive stress regulation system.

The thyroid gland is the largest in your endocrinesystem and it’s located in your neck. It works hand in hand with the stress regulation system of the body and together they are the MASTER METABOLISM REGULATOR. Some of the things they regulate are

• Your metabolism… and if you are fast burner of calories or slow burner which determines your weight gain tendency.
• Your mood balance⁣.
• digestion⁣
• Regulation of your body temperature⁣
. Sleep
• period cycle

A sick thyroid will show signs of this in your experience of your cycle. Here are some of the signs your thyroid is struggling to do its job –⁣

• You are having multiple periods per month⁣
• Your bleeds are heavy and clotty
• You’ve experienced one or more miscarriages⁣
• Anovulation.
• Tiredness fatigue.
• Cold and clammy extremities.
• You have unexplained weight gain despite eating well and exercising regularly⁣
• You have puffy eyes⁣

It’s important that you work with your doctor to test your thyroid with blood tests if you’re experiencing above symptoms .

Thyroid problems are one of the most difficult to reverse in my experience. However it can be kept under control and natural healthy conception is possible with my protocol. You may be prescribed the Thyroid pill which is synthetic Thyroid hormones and it can help you short term. But getting dependent on the pill and keep on increasing the dose without addressing the root cause of the problem won’t be able to serve you long-term. Thyroid pill can only mask the TSH for sometime but doesn’t do anything to heal the root cause of the problem which is not in your thyroid BTW. Thyroid disease can be managed naturally in my experience. I have reversed not only my own thyroid disease but have helped hundreds of women heal their hormone Imbalances and achieve healthy natural pregnancies. It’s frustrating to see that so many women are suffering and not getting the right information. It can be reversed not by masking the symptoms with drugs but by addressing the root cause of the problem. Needs root cause evaluation with further investigations…Can be healed with diet changes, lifestyle changes, self care and Detoxification.

In pregnancy, If your TSH level is high, you may have to support your thyroid with thyroid pill ( synthetic thyroid hormone) but you also want to address the root cause of the problem. In my experience, I have seen thyroid problems are secondary to liver, colon, kidney and adrenal weakness. Only popping thyroid pill without supporting your endocrine system and elimination pathways can cause stress to the baby . Find a good Gynaecologist who really understands the hormones and heals the body as integrated unit. Here are my few tips to support your thyroid gland naturally. The best way to improve your thyroid hormone production is by adding in certain foods to your diet that will support the thyroid and protect it from disruption. You can also choose to avoid certain substances that will have an adverse affect on your thyroid.

Coconut oil is high in saturated fat, lauric acid and medium-chain fatty acids. Most of the refined oils popularly used in cooking, baking etc have a negative impact on the thyroid.

Adding some sea salt helps and so does bit D optimisation.

Avoid Fluoride and Chlorine – these chemicals are present in our drinking water and toothpaste so it’s best to get a filter that will take them out for you and choose flouride free toothpaste.

Don’t Eat Raw Cruciferous Vegetables – Cruciferous vegetables like: broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, kale, collard greens, bok choy and cabbage contain goitrogens which is a chemical that suppresses the function of the thyroid gland by disrupting and blocking the enzyme that lets your thyroid use the iodine in your body to make the thyroid hormone. If you have an underactive thyroid or hypothyroidism then eating raw cruciferous vegetables can suppress the thyroid function.

Manage Your Stress – I know the s is a big one!! Stress throws your cortisol levels off, which is turn impacts your adrenals and therefore your thyroid. Cortisol helps your thyroid work more efficiently and so producing just the right amount is very important for healthy thyroid function. Deep breathing is a great way to balance stress hormones.

Remember that your body is always on your side. Once you start working with your body, the body shows signs of improvement and loves you right back.
